The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics is in full swing. Behind the athletes’ hard work and repeated achievements in the competition, there are a large number of Winter Olympic Village volunteers and staff who are working silently to ensure the operation of various services in the Winter Olympic Village and the regional competition time. The service works smoothly.

The auspicious white color is paired with three symmetrical rainbow stripes, the fresh blue and white color scheme, and the bright spring yellow. The volunteers and staff wearing work clothes with different themes are also a flowing landscape. The clothes they wear are all “protective work clothes” designed by Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology.

How to highlight professional attributes and functional requirements in clothing while providing health protection for staff and volunteers in the closed loop during the Winter Olympics? A number of teachers and students from the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology formed a creative team, which conducted in-depth research on clothing needs, carried out derivative designs based on the characteristics of work clothes, and adjusted the plan three times. Finally, functional clothing styles were presented for the four work categories of guidance, accommodation, catering, and waste removal. and ready-to-wear design solutions.

On February 9, three creative members of the design team of Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology accepted an exclusive interview with a reporter from the Beijing News to reveal the design concept behind work clothes.

Revolving around Winter Olympics elements and reflecting traditional Chinese aesthetics

The “Double Olympic City” themed work clothes designed by Guo Yucheng, a teacher at Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, are mainly used in various types of guidance, consultation, services, etc. Scenes.

Guo Yucheng introduced that the design of this set of work clothes revolves around “Beijing and the Olympics”. The color of the clothes is a large area of auspicious white, with the front placket printed with the “BEIJING2022” Winter Olympics text and graphics as the visual central axis. The three slanted rainbow stripes presented symmetrically on the sides show the upright beauty unique to Chinese design.

Among them, the color of the rainbow stripes is taken from the Olympic five-ring colors. It uses a gradient and dazzling colorful effect and a simple linear graphic to express the history of Beijing, the Double Olympic City. Color changes as the seasons change from summer to winter.

The “Ice and Snow Dream” themed work clothes designed by Xu Bo, a teacher at Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, are mainly used in guest room service scenarios.

“Considering that the protagonists in the Winter Olympic Village are athletes, the clothing patterns of the service staff should not be too many and simple color blocks should be used to express the clothing.” Xu Bo said, therefore The clothing colors are blue and white, which represent ice and snow sports, echoing the theme colors of the Beijing Winter Olympics. The visual experience is fresh and comfortable, allowing the wearer to better integrate into practical scenes such as hotel rooms in the Winter Olympics Village, which is conducive to getting closer. The psychological distance between staff and athletes from various countries.

The “Building Dreams of the Future” theme work clothes designed by Wan Lan, a teacher at Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, are mainly used in catering service scenes and garbage removal scenes.

Wan Lan introduced that when it comes to people working in the catering industry, people will naturally think of the professional image and representative color of chefs. In international practice, chefs’ clothing uses white as the identification color, which represents “Clean” also symbolizes ice and snow. In order to make the clothing better reflect the elements of the Winter Olympics, she chose red plum and azure in the Olympic color system as the colors of the apron. The visual effect is softer and more comfortable. A sense of intimacy.

Satisfy functionality and have certain protective functions

In addition to meeting visual appearance requirements, work clothes must also play the most basic protective role for workers in the closed loop.

“As for the protective function, should we use Class A (medical) protection or Class B (civilian) protection? Although the higher the degree of protection, the better, but is it suitable for specific scenarios? Is the image display appropriate?” Wan Lan said that on this issue, experts from the National Health Commission also conducted demonstrations and gave suggestions, choosing to use Class B protection, which is civilian protection, mainly work clothes, and also has certain protective functions.

Guo Yucheng said that in terms of design, clothing must coordinate functionality and protection.

He explained that functionality includes two aspects, one is the identification of work types; the other is meeting human mobility, that is, meeting the activity needs of Winter Olympic Village volunteers and staff in basic work scenarios.

In terms of protection, the clothing mainly uses special fabrics such as SMS medical protective clothing. Among them, the first layer is made of double-layer spunbond non-woven fabric, which is composed of polyester and polypropylene and has good firmness and wear resistance. The middle layer is made of double-layer melt-blown cloth, which has good filtering and shielding properties. The common masks used by people are melt-blown non-woven materials, which ensure breathability, shield against viruses, and achieve thermal insulation effect at the same time. The last layer is spunbond non-woven fabric, which is composed of multiple layers. In addition to being wear-resistant and firm, it can also achieve visual balance and be skin-friendly.

MemoryIt is understood that the fabrics of “work clothes with protective functions” are all independently developed in China. They mainly use PP coated non-woven fabrics and SMS special fabrics for medical protective clothing. The clothing fabrics used are also different for different work scenarios.

The “Ice and Snow Dream” theme work clothes designed by Xu Bo, the top is made of PP coated non-woven fabric, and the bottom is made of SMS fabric. It is waterproof, degreasing and strong to facilitate volunteers to shake sheets and clean the clothes. A series of actions such as grounding, transporting garbage, bending and squatting.

Xu Bo said that although the main working scene of the housekeeping staff is indoors, where the temperature is basically maintained above 20 degrees Celsius, their work also includes transporting garbage outdoors, and the work space involves indoor to They were not allowed to add more clothes during the outdoor switch, so the material of the top was relatively thick, taking into account the protective properties of the clothes, as well as the windproof and warm properties of switching back and forth between temperatures.

Although the fabric has “multiple layers”, another feature it has is that it is “light and thin”. Guo Yucheng said that this is also the reason why the work clothes are better in craftsmanship. Its technical breakthrough point is to achieve the lightweight and weight limit, which reflects the characteristics of the Winter Olympics in science and technology.

Wanlan’s design adopts the simplest, most convenient and most practical concepts. Its “Building Dreams for the Future” themed work clothes are all made of disposable medical coated isolation gown fabrics, which are thin, economical, and more convenient to handle harmlessly, reflecting the concept of running the competition frugally.

Reduce the sense of tension and make it easier to put on and take off

The reporter learned that the difficulty of this project is to design work clothes with protective functions, but the appearance cannot be the same as common medical clothes. The one-piece protective suit is similar, giving people a sense of oppression and tension.

In people’s inherent impression, epidemic prevention staff are dressed in white clothing, hats and goggles. When people see many volunteers wearing white protective clothing marching in and out in order to engage in voluntary work , is visually intense.

In this regard, Xu Bo optimized the appearance of the clothing in terms of design. The color of the clothing was blue and white, which represent ice and snow sports. The overall look is relatively clean.

From a style point of view, the advantage of the jumpsuit is that it has good airtightness, but the disadvantage is that the traces of the protective suit are too heavy. There is a protective suit in the national standard that can also be designed as a separate body. Therefore, referring to the national standard, many Bo designed the “Ice and Snow Dream” theme work clothes into upper and lower separate styles.

The catering work clothes designed by Wan Lan adopt the internationally accepted “apron” design, which combines the visual sense of disposable isolation blouses and aprons in an orderly manner, highlighting the service attributes and weakening the epidemic prevention clothing. It brings a sense of distance and tension.

The reporter learned that during the design process, Beifu team members also investigated the work flow of the staff in the closed loop of the Olympic Village. In order to avoid secondary contact during the donning and doffing process, the design should Consider the ease of putting on and taking off.

“As far as guide clothing is concerned, the silhouette and structure of the clothing are combined with ergonomics to meet the needs of specific work scenarios that are comfortable to wear and easy to put on and take off.” Guo Yucheng said. The “Building Dreams of the Future” theme work clothes designed by Wan Lan are in the form of blouses, which are convenient for staff to operate with one hand.
